NCAA Div. I Women: USC Leads the Pac-10 After First Day

By Rod Commons

FEDERAL WAY, Wash., Feb. 22. THE USC TROJANS hold a slim lead after the first day of action at the Pacific-10 Conference Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships, while a pair of champions from last year successfully defended their crowns at the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center Thursday.

Finals were held in six events, with the Trojans piling up 360.5 points to pace the nine Pac-10 schools competing in the meet. Only Oregon does not sponsor a swimming team. Defending champion Arizona sits in second place with 342 points, followed in order by UCLA 324, California 294, Stanford 282.5, Arizona State 170, Washington State 131, Washington 115 and Oregon State 102.

Stanford’s Jessica Foschi and Kellie Brennan from USC both defended titles they won last year. Foschi captured first place in the 500 yard freestyle with a lifetime best time of 4:39.74 seconds, while Brennan wasthe winner in the one-meter diving competition, scoring 317.0 points.

The University of California won the first event, the 200 yard freestyle relay, in convincing fashion, clocking 1:30.78, more than a second ahead of Arizona, in second.

Foschi led a one-three Stanford finish in the 500 free. Foschi won in a breeze, as teammate Lauren Thies grabbed the third spot (4:46.14) behind Arizona's Sarah Tolar, the runner-up in 4:43.50. USC scored big points by taking the fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth places.

Stanford's Shelly Ripple, who graces the cover of the March issue of Swimming World, swam a lifetime best–and nation-leading 1:57.83 to win the 200 yards individual medley. Cal's Natalie Coughlin, who has led the nation in this event all season, was second in
1:58.13, while Arizona's Amanda Beard, who posted the fastest qualifying time (1:59.85), was third in 2:00.64.

Cal's versatile sprinter, Haley Cope, won the 50 free easily in 22.32, while Stanford took the 400 medley relay in a blistering 3:35.40.

A total of nine champions from last year’s meet are back to defend their titles, while three members of USA’s Olympic team of 2000 are also competing. The Olympians include Amanda Beard from Arizona, Misty Hyman from Stanford and California’s Staciana Stitts.
