Kara Lynn Joyce Facebook Fan Page Interview Comes to a Close

PHOENIX, Arizona, October 30. SPECIAL thanks to Olympian Kara Lynn Joyce for participating in the first Swimming World
Facebook Fan Page interview.

Here is the interview in full that appeared on the Swimming World Facebook Fan Page:

Andrew Choi
how r u so good at life in swimming
Olivia Ries
What made you want to keep going even when you felt not good at swimming or even that u just shoundnt be swimming?
Jeff Commings
Does being a postgrad still swimming at your alma mater remind you constantly of your great swimming at Georgia?
Kara Lynn Joyce
Andrew, I set goals and work towards them every day, stay focused and have fun!
Kara Lynn Joyce
Jeff, I think no matter where I end up swimming I will always remember the wonderful 4 years I spent representing the Bulldogs! I still love swimming for Jack and helping out the team as much as I can
Kara Lynn Joyce
Olivia, I just try to do my best even when I'm maybe not feeling my best in the water. Those are the days that make you better.
Jn Lau
When sprinting free do you emphasize throwing your hands, arms, or shoulders forward? or all of the above at once? what do you like to lead your stroke with?
Bob Ingram
Hi Kara. Who was the most influential person or persons in your life, and why? What did he/she/they do or what did you admire about them to help you become the person you are today?
Kara Lynn Joyce
Jn, while I think it is important to have speed and a fast turnover, technique is the most important thing you can focus on. For me, rather than just throwing hands, arms, or shoulders, I try to first focus on the perfect hand entry and elbow catch, then try to increase my stroke rate from there!
Kara Lynn Joyce
I could write you pages on that question, Bob! I've been extremely fortunate in my life to have a great support system of family, friends and coaches. My mom coached me for the first 12 years of my career, then I swam for Jon Urbanchek at Michigan, and now I'm with Jack Bauerle here at Georgia. I would say they have all helped to shape me into the swimmer and person I am today. I have been lucky to always have people that believe in me and support me 🙂
Robert Bellamy
When are you going to be on dancing with the stars?
Terry W. Stoddard
Hello Kara. When it comes to that point inthe season and you know that you need to get your kick "in shape to compete" what are the top few things you make sure that you do and/or your favorite kick set?
Andrea Georoff
Hi Kara! My question for you is: when you are given a long set in practice, like say 3,000+ threshold, how do you focus and do your best the whole way through?
Andrea Georoff
Also, if your were a contestant on American Gladiators, what would your name be??
Kara Lynn Joyce
Robert, great question! I think the only way I would go on dwts is if my boyfriend did it with me!!
Kara Lynn Joyce
Hey Terry! We work our legs really hard all season so when it gets to be race time we cut back on leg weights in the gym and do less kick sets. It's really important for me to focus on my rhythm in freestyle and try to maintain a 6 beat kick throughout my race. One of my favorite kicking drills is swim with slow motion arms and try to achieve a 12 beat kick. This makes 6 beat kick seem like cake!
Margaret Joyce O'Neill
Hi Kara! My question is from Kelly. Any advice on how to improve reaction time?
Kara Lynn Joyce
Andrea! That's a great question. It changes all the time… if I'm really bored I'll try to sing an awesome song example: Miley's Party in the USA, most of the time though I'm focusing on trying to hit all my goal times and race the people around me.
I will get back to you on the AG name.
Kara Lynn Joyce
Hi Margaret/Kelly! Reaction time is tricky. I have had my best reaction time in races when I felt like a ball of energy on the blocks. I focus on exactly what I am trying to do and channel all my energy into my start.
Another option is to lock yourself in a room with some flies and a fly swatter and have at it!
Margaret Joyce O'Neill
Thanks Kara! We'll see how she does this weekend…otherwise it's the flies!!

We will keep our readers posted when the next interview will take place. We are working on some interesting people to invite to be part of the fun. Let us know via Reaction Time below if you know any swimmers who are really active on Facebook and might enjoy an open-ended conversation with our fans.
