Texas vs. Missouri

COLUMBIA, Missouri, October 16. TEXAS collected seven individual wins and swept the two relay events on its way to a commanding 150-93 victory over Missouri Thursday evening in the Longhorns' season opener at the Mizzou Aquatics Center.

The defending Big 12 champion and a fifth-place finisher at the 2009 NCAA Championships, Texas won the night's first event, the 200-yard medley relay, by the slimmest of margins. Sophomore Katie Riefenstahl, junior Carlye Ellis, freshman Jessica Guro and sophomore Karlee Bispo claimed the event in 1 minute, 43.30 seconds and topped the Tigers by one one-hundredth of a second.

Sophomore Kathleen Hersey, the 2009 Big 12 Swimmer of the Year, claimed the next event, the 1,000 freestyle in 10:00.78. Senior Susana Escobar took second in 10:03.27. Riefenstahl delivered the Horns' third consecutive win in the 200 freestyle, where she was victorious in 1:49.36. Sophomore Leah Gingrich took third in 1:49.72.

After Mizzou captured the 50 freestyle, Hersey chipped in her second win for Texas by clocking 2:01.25 in the 200 IM. Gingrich led a one-two Texas finish in the 200 butterfly, where she was victorious in 2:01.68. Freshman Caroline McElhany took second in 2:03.54. Escobar went on to claim the 500 freestyle in 4:54.31, and freshman Maren Taylor scored her first collegiate win when she captured the three-meter diving event with 299.70 points. Taylor led the Texas contingent with a second-place showing in the one-meter diving event with 263.78 points.

Bispo added a win in the 200 breaststroke in 2:17.18 before Texas finished off the team victory by claiming the 400 freestyle relay in 3:23.77. Hersey led off in 51.35 before freshman Bethany Adams split a team-best 50.32 on the second leg. Junior Brie Powers picked up the third leg in 51.17 before Bispo anchored in 50.93.

Texas resumes competition Friday morning with the Big 12 Relays at 9 a.m. at the Mizzou Aquatics Center.
