College Recruit Rankings Profile: Five-Star Christian Higgins, Class of 2011 -- September 7, 2009

PHOENIX, Arizona, September 7. CHRISTIAN Higgins, a five-star recruit from the Class of 2011, is the next subject in the Swimming World College Recruit Rankings Profiles series. Higgins comes from New Canaan, Conn., and swims for New Canaan YMCA. He also attends New Canaan High.

Higgins maintains his profile in the Swimming World College Recruit Rankings powered by Take Your Marks, and is a breaststroke specialist.

He owns senior national cuts in the 100-meter breast (1:02.29) and 200-meter breast (2:15.53). His top yards times are a 55.52 in the 100-yard breast and a 2:00.63 in the 200-yard breast.

Where and when did you start swimming?
I had always been a swimmer, but it wasn't until about seventh grade that I made the switch into a full-time swimmer. My YMCA coaches at the time had been telling me that I could be a pretty good swimmer if I put in the time to train. Around that same time, I broke my collarbone in my school's first lacrosse game of the season. It was after that incident that I decided to swim year round.

Who would you name as the most influential person and coach in your swimming career?
I think my coach Jason Paige has been a big influence on me. My older teammates have also been a big influence. They keep me from getting a big ego by making fun of me all the time.

What, to this point, is your best moment in the sport and why?
Winning Junior Nationals in a national record time was a pretty awesome moment, especially since that had been my goal from the start of the season. Being able to meet your goals is always exciting.

Walk us through a day of practice:
During the summer I'll have double swim practices every day except Wednesday and Sunday. The morning goes from about 6 till 8:15 usually going between 6000- 7000 yards depending on how close we are to our championship season. Then I'll come back in the afternoon to do dry land strengthening for about an hour. Afterwards I'll hop in the pool and do an aerobic 5000 yards or power racks.

What is your favorite set?
My favorite set would have to be a broken 200 stroke off the blocks trying to get below your best time, then a 400 easy. Then get up on the blocks again and do a 100 broken then a 300 easy and finally a 50 all out.

What is your least favorite set?
Least favorite set would have to be 3 ten minute swims all out or a T-30.

What are your short-term goals?
My short-term goal is to make the youth world cup team.

What are your long-term goals?
Long-term goals would be to compete against Olympians such as Mark Gangloff and Eric Shanteau.

Is there anything else interesting that you'd like our readers to know about you?
Nothing special love listening to music and playing with my Boston Terrier Bosox.
