Jose Finkel Trophy: Luiz Rogerio Arapiraca, Women’s Relay Set South American Records

FLORIANOPOLIS, Brazil, September 3. DURING the first two days of long course meter competition at the Jose Finkel Trophy, a pair of South American records took a tumble.

Luiz Rogerio Arapiraca turned in a South American record time of 15:13.13 in the men's 1500 free. That performance beat his previous record of 15:15.94 set in May. Lucas Kanieski placed second in 15:16.53, while Lucas Azevedo took third in 15:23.94.

Daynara Ferreira claimed the women's 50 title in a Brazilian record time of 24.99. Her performance wiped out the 25.06 set by Flavia Delaroli in December 2008. Delaroli placed second in 25.09, while Nathalia Dos Santos took third in 25.33. Ferreira returned with a 58.46 to win the women's 100 fly. Daiene Dias took second in 59.28, while Daniele Jesus placed third in 59.53. Dandara Antonio also cleared 1:00 with a fourth-place 59.77.

Poliana Okimoto turned in a Brazilian record time of 8:40.05 in the women's 800 free. That swim clipped more than a second from her previous record of 8:41.58. Maria Ferreira finished second in 8:52.27 with Izabela Fortini taking third in 8:53.60.

Nicholas Dos Santos set a meet record time of 21.55 to win the men's 50 free. Bruno Fratus placed second in 21.80, while Guilherme Dos Santos earned third in 21.97.

Thiago Pereira also clocked a meet record with a 2:10.91 in the men's 200 breast. He easily beat second-place finisher Tales Cerdeira (2:11.59). Henrique Barbosa wound up third overall in 2:12.29. Pereira claimed another meet record in the men's 400 IM with a 4:15.26. Diogo Yabe earned second in 4:21.40, while Thiago Simon finished third in 4:22.22.

Rodrigo Castro clinched a meet record in the men's 200 free with a 1:48.46 to 1:48.62 victory over Lucas Salatta. Joao Lucca finished third in 1:49.34.

Gabriel Manga topped the men's 100 fly with a meet-record time of 51.06. He knocked off Kaio Almeida, who placed second in 51.51. Fernando Silva garnered third in 52.03.

Fabiola Molina took down the women's 50 back meet record with a 27.99. Etiene Medeiros placed second in 28.84, while Lorena Rezenda took third in 29.16.

Joanna Maranhao captured the meet record in the women's 400 IM in 4:40.65. Julia Gerotto finished a distant second in 4:52.66 with Julia Siquiera winding up third in 4:55.11.

Thamy Ventorin snagged the women's 200 breast title in 2:32.70, while Tatiane Sakemi finished second in 2:33.48. Sakemi had to hold off Michele Schmidt, who took third in 2:33.92.

Monique Ferreira cruised in the women's 200 free with a 2:00.97. Ana Carolina Santos touched second in 2:03.98, while Sarah Correa claimed third in 2:04.13.

Guilherme Guido claimed the men's 50 back in 24.89. Daniel Orzechowski placed second in 25.22 with Glauber Silva taking third in 25.29.

In relay action, Delaroli, Julyana Kury, Michelle Lenhardt and Tatiana Barbosa set the South American record in the women's 200 free relay with a 1:40.63. Andre Daudt, Nicholas Dos Santos, Fratus and Fernando Silva won the men's 200 free relay in 1:27.62.
