Serbia Downs USA Junior Men 8-6 On Day Two Of FINA Junior World Championships -- August 23, 2009

SIBENIK, Croatia, August 23. SERBIA was an 8-6 winner over the USA Men's Junior National Team on the second day of action at the FINA Junior World Championships. Josh Samuels (SoCal) led the USA attack with three goals in the loss. The United States will square off against South Africa tomorrow.

Serbia struck first in this contest connecting for a goal at the 5:35 mark in the first period for a 1-0 lead. That was short lived as Griffin White (SoCal) answered with a score less than thirty seconds later for a tie game at 1-1. The scoring would halt for a few minutes until Serbia came back with consecutive goals to close out the period to take a 3-1 advantage. In the second stanza the United States drew closer as they kept the Serbia off the board while Nikola Vavic (Trojan) found the cage to cut the deficit to one at 3-2 headed to intermission.

The third quarter belonged to Serbia as they kept the United States scoreless and rattled off three straight goals to take a commanding 6-2 lead going into the final quarter. In the fourth Team USA looked to rally and it started with a score from White to halve the Serbia lead at 6-3. Serbia came back with a score on the next possession to go up 7-3. From there Samuels looked to single-handedly put the United States back in this game with three straights to goals to draw within a score at 7-6 with 3:21 to play. That would be as close as Team USA would get however as Serbia scored the game breaking goal with just thirty seconds to play to seal the game.

With the loss the United States falls to 1-1 thus far in the tournament. John Sibley (Lamorinda) again went the distance in net stopping 11 shots. Both squads were 1/1 on penalty shots while the United States was 4/6 on power plays and Serbia was 3/4.
