British Short Course Grand Prix: Flash! Joanne Jackson Smashes 400 Free Record

LEEDS, Great Britain, August 8. WITH one world record already set in South Africa, today could get pretty busy in the short course world record books as Joanne Jackson smashed the women's 400 free standard at the British Short Course Grand Prix.

Jackson clocked a 3:54.92 in the middle distance event to knock more than a second off Laure Manaudou's world record of 3:56.09 set in 2006.

Canada's Ryan Cochrane cruised in the men's 1500 free for the win with a 14:28.63. The swim broke the Canadian record of 14:35.73 he set in February 2008, and is also the fastest swim among any swimmer from the Americas. Canada's Kier Maitland placed second in 14:50.06, while teammate Michael Zoldos took third in 14:53.45.

Canada's Hanna Kubas followed with a 27.35 in the women's 50 back. She just missed the Canadian record of 27.26 set by Jennifer Carroll in 2002. Alexandra Hooper placed second in 27.86, while Canada's Sinead Russell finished third in 27.92.

Canada's Paul Kornfeld downed the national mark in the men's 50 breast with a 26.69 for the win. He erased the 27.04 set by Scott Dickens in March. Darren Mew touched second in 26.76, just missing his British mark of 26.72. Canada's Mathieu Bois wound up third in 26.98.

Joseph Roebuck topped the men's 200 fly in 1:52.00. Canada's Stefan Hirniak turned in a second-place 1:53.43 to erase the Canadian record of 1:54.27 set by Shamek Pietucha in 2000. Iain Macmillan claimed third in 1:55.70.

Canada's Annamay Pierse dipped under her women's 100 breast national record with a 1:04.28. The swim clipped her 1:04.67 set in March. Teammates Kayla Voytechek (1:06.11) and Martha McCabe (1:06.69) completed the top three.

Canada's Jake Tapp crushed the national record in the 100 back with a 50.68. That performance smashed the 52.18 set by Riley James in 2000. Ben Stasiulis finished second in 50.83, while Canada's Pascal Wollach clinched third in 50.84.

Canada's Audrey Lacroix came within a second of Libby Trickett's world record 55.74 in the women's 100 fly. Lacroix's 56.74 shattered the Canadian mark of 58.26 set by Kendra Chernoff in March. Chernoff finished second in 57.56, while Louise Pate snared third in 58.31.

Canada's Brent Hayden, Joel Greenshields, Blake Worsley and Hassan Abdel-Halik won the men's 400 free relay in 3:07.89. They whacked three seconds off the national mark of 3:10.99 set in March.

Victoria Poon, Genevieve Saumur, Jennifer Beckberger and Heather Maclean won the women's 400 free relay in 3:32.53. The swim cut five seconds from the national record of 3:37.78 set in March.
