USA Swimming Sectionals, Buffalo: Exciting Finishes Showcased on Second Night

BUFFALO, New York, August 7. THE second night of long course swimming at the USA Swimming Sectionals held in Buffalo featured some seriously close finishes.

Curl-Burke's Meredith Monroe touched out SwimQuest's Kaitlin Jones, 2:04.58 to 2:04.69, in the women's 200 free to open the evening. Ohio State's Farriss Blaskovits wound up third in 2:05.45.

In another exciting finish, Snow's Matt McLean overtook Longhorn's Bryan Collins, 1:50.32 to 1:50.49, in the men's 200 free. McLean threw down a 27.53 final 50 compared to Collins' 28.25. Gators' Seth Wensel finished third in 1:53.51.

Lehigh Valley's Jessica Guro picked up the third straight close call win of the night with a 1:01.22 to 1:01.38 triumph over Makos' Amanda Kendall in the women's 100 fly. Germantown Academy's Taylor Sneed touched third in 1:03.08.

Makos' Sean Fletcher earned the men's 100 fly title in 54.27 with Schenectady's Spencer Booth placing second in 54.90. Southeastern Virginia's Scott Madaras finished third in 55.63.

Gators' Ali Horn held off Long Island's Erica Derlath, 4:56.48 to 4:56.92, for the women's 400 IM win. Eastern Express' Victoria Cassidy walked away third in 4:59.14.

Schenectady's Shayne Buckley took the men's 400 IM title in 4:33.40. Scarlet's James Capparell touched second in 4:35.45 with Mason's Tom Koucheravy completing the top three in 4:36.52.

The 400 free relay ended the night. Team Pittsburgh's Kristen McMullan, Lisa McDonnell, Maggie Walker and Emily Destefeno won the women's title in 3:53.21. Team Pittsburgh also won the men's title with Otto Pagel, Justin Corvin, Chris Millen and Alex Kubicek clocking a 3:30.67.
