NCAA Div. I Men: Notre Dame Breezes By St. Banoaventure

ST. BONAVENTURE, NY. Feb. 3. THE UNIVERSITY of Notre Dame men's swimming and diving team (7-2) completed its 2000-01 dual meet season on Saturday, Feb. 3, with a 137.5 – 100.5 victory over St. Bonaventure at the Reilly Center Pool in St. Bonaventure, NY.

The Irish claimed 10 event victories on the day, while the diving group of senior Herb Huesman (Cincinnati, Ohio), Andy Maggio (Cincinnati,Ohio), Joe Miller (South Bend, Ind.) and Tony Xie (Granger, Ind.) completed an undefeated dual meet season. In Notre Dame's nine dual meets this season, the Irish divers posted an undefeated record on both the one- and
three-meter boards. In addition, all four won at least one competition during the season.

Against St. Bonaventure, Miller won the three-meter competition with 302.03 points. Maggio placed first in three-meter diving with 335.40 points.

Ryan Verlin (Rye, NY), who led the Irish to a victory over Cleveland State on Friday, Feb. 2, with two individual victories, repeated the feat against St. Bonaventure with a first-place finish in the 200
individual medley (1:57.59) the 200 butterfly (1:55.46).

Other event winners in the meet for the Irish included Austin Anderson (Indianapolis, Ind.) in the 200 freestyle, Michael Flanagan (San Diego, Calif.) in the 1,000 freestyle, Matt Obringer (Jacksonville, Fla.)
in the 100 freestyle and John Hudson (Alpharetta, Ga.) in the 200 backstroke.

Jonathan Pierce (Newburgh, Ind.) continued the strong end to his season, winning the 500 freestyle in 4:37.03, setting a new pool record. Pierce will be entering the 2001 BIG EAST Championship (Feb. 15-17) as the two-time (1999 and 2000) 1,650 freestyle champion.
