NCAA Div. I: North Carolina Sweeps N.C. State

By Dave Lohse

RALEIGH, N.C., Feb. 2. NORTH CAROLINA'S men's and women's swimming and diving teams closed out their 2000-01 dual meet seasons on Friday afternoon by sweeping NC State at the Willis Casey Aquatics Center.

The #8 Tar Heel women defeated the Wolfpack 149-92 while the #16 Carolina men's team whipped the Wolfpack 175-61, avenging a loss to NC State suffered in Chapel Hill last year.

North Carolina's women won nine of the 11 swimming events with senior co-captain Erika Acuff (Gladwyne, Pa.) the only two-event individual winner. She won the 400-yard individual medley in 4:20.06 and the 500-yard freestyle in 4:55.32.

UNC's men's team won 10 of the 11 swimming events. Junior Chris Helin and freshman Yuri Suguiyama were both two-event winners. Helin won the 400-yard individual medley in 3:56.83 and the 100-yard breaststroke in 56.47. Suguiyama won the 1650-yard freestyle in 15:32.87 and the 500-yard freestyle in 4:35.37. For Helin it was his top time of the season in the 400 IM, besting the 3:57.33 he swam against Minnesota last November.

With the victory the Tar Heel women ended their dual meet season with a record of 8-1 overall and the Tar Heels finished undefeated in the ACC at 5-0. The Carolina men finish their season 6-2 overall and 4-1 in the ACC. NC State's men fell to 3-8 overall and 0-6 in the ACC. The Wolfpack women are 6-7 overall and 0-6 in the ACC.

The win gave the UNC women their first undefeated ACC season since 1998. UNC has now compiled 12 seasons without a loss in the ACC standings since achieving that feat for the first time in the 1982 campaign.

UNC now leads the all-time series with the NC State 36-30 while the Tar Heel women lead the rivalry 24-5.

UNC will defend its Atlantic Coast Conference championship when it competes in the ACC Championships at Charlottesville, Va., February 15-17. The UNC men will compete in the ACC Championships at Charlottes-ville, Va., February 24-26. Carolina's men finished second in the conference last year.
