World University Games, Water Polo: Men’s Semifinals Commence

BELGRADE, Serbia, July 11. THE final day before medal matches concluded for men's water polo at the World University Games.

Croatia downed Greece, 11-8, in one semifinal. David Babic led Croatia with four goals, while the team went 11-for-29 from the field. Dionysios Karountzos tallied a hat trick for Greece, which converted on 8 of 27 shots.

Australia clipped Serbia, 7-6, in the other semifinal match. Robert Maitland connected with three goals, as Australia tallied 7 goals on 24 shots. Six different Serbians scored as the hosts went 6-for-23 from the field.

In the fifth through eighth place semifinal matches, the U.S. beat Italy, 11-8, and Hungary bested Russia, 13-11. John Mann hit the back of the net six times for the U.S., which went 11-for-28. Roman di Somma and Federico la Penna posted two goals each for Italy, which converted 8 of 28 shots.

Hungary's Marton Toth proved to be a busy man going 5-for-13 to lead Hungary, which connected on 13 of 36 shots. Viktor Vishnyakov collected three goals for Russia, which went 11-for-32 from the field.

Spain edged Japan, 13-12, for ninth place overall. Eduardo Minguez Simarro tallied four goals for Spain, which went 13-for-34. Keigo Okawa, Masatoshi Someya and Yusuke Shimizu each notched hat tricks for Japan, which went 12-for-33.

France earned 11th-place honors with a 12-10 triumph over Montenegro. Romain Harrissart tallied four goals for France, which converted 12 of 32 shots. Darko Brguljan scored four times for Montenegro, which went 10-for-34.
