Canada World Championships Trials: Annamay Pierse Takes Run at World Record; Joins 2:20 Club

MONTREAL, Quebec, Canada, July 10. ANNAMAY Pierse gave the crowd something big to cheer for as she nearly tracked down the world record in the women's 200 breast at the Canada World Championships Trials.

Pierse cut three seconds from her national record with an astounding time of 2:20.71. The effort finished just half-a-second off Rebecca Soni's global mark of 2:20.22 set at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. The time not only crushed her national record of 2:23.77 also set in Beijing, but it moved her to third all time in the event. Only Soni and Australia's Leisel Jones (2:20.54) have been faster. The trio are also the only swimmers to have cleared 2:21 and 2:22.

Martha McCabe placed second in 2:23.08, under the former national mark, while Ashley McGregor took third in 2:30.19.

In prelims, Kendra Chernoff clocked a Canadian record in the women's 100 fly. She punched the wall in 58.70 to clear the 58.88 set by MacKenzie Downing back in 2007. Audrey Lacroix, however, topped the finale with a time of 59.40. Chernoff finished second in 59.48 with Downing taking third in 1:00.14.

Pascal Wollach took down the Canadian record in the men's 50 back. He stopped the clock in 25.37 to lower the 25.72 set by Callum Ng back in 2007. Charles Francis finished second in 25.88 with Jake Tapp taking third in 26.22.

In other finals action, Joe Bartoch won the men's 100 fly in 52.70. Thomas Kindler placed second in 52.92, while Stefan Hirniak completed the top three in 53.53.

Alexa Komarnycky captured the women's 400 free crown in 4:11.77, while Savannah King touched second in 4:12.84. Barbara Jardin claimed third in 4:13.77. Ryan Cochrane followed with a 3:49.37 to win the men's 400 free. Michael Zoldos finished second in 3:50.93, while Hassaan Abdel-Khalik snared third in 3:54.29.
