Purdue Swimmers Continue Academic Success

WEST LAFAYETTE, Indiana, July 6. THE Purdue women's swimming and diving team continued to impress in the classroom during the spring semester, putting together a team GPA of 3.54.

"I'm proud of all the hard work our women put in this year in the pool and in the classroom," head coach John Klinge said. "Our academic success is something the team takes pride in, and we were pretty excited to finish the year with such a high GPA."

The Boilermakers' team GPA led the Big Ten and was the fourth-highest in Division I during the 2009 spring term. Rice led the nation with a 3.62 and was followed by Cincinnati's 3.57 and Gardner-Webb's 3.55. Minnesota, which tied for 14th with a 3.44 team GPA, was the next Big Ten team after Purdue.

Emily Wetzel was named Academic All-American by the College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA). In her final season at Purdue, the Cincinnati, Ohio, native won the Big Ten platform diving crown and earned honorable mention All-America honors in the 1- and 3-meter competitions.

In addition to Wetzel, Purdue also saw six student-athletes placed on the CSCAA honorable mention Academic All-American list. Katie Beck, Kristen Gilson, co-captain Leah Henninger, Ariel Martin, Lauren Roth and Allie Smith were all given honorable mention acclaim.
