World University Games, Water Polo: Women’s Prelims Continue

BELGRADE, Serbia, July 6. PRELIMINARY competition in women's water polo continued at the World University Games held in Serbia.

Russia downed Canada, 13-7, in the first match of the day. Ekaterina Zelentsova notched a hat trick to lead Russia, which went 13-for-31 from the field. Saara Majuri and Kerry Kaukinen collected two goals each for Canada, as the team went 7-for-23.

Hungary topped Italy, 12-8, in the second match. Barbara Bujka tallied four goals, while Alexandra Kiss notched three for Hungary. The squad went 12-for-25 from the field. Silvia Motta, Allegra Lapi and Lara Dalorto each totaled two goals for Italy, as the Italians converted 8 of 30 shots.

The hosts used a strong first half and held on to beat Japan, 8-7. Serbia scored all eight of its goals in the first half with Ivana Corovic, Natasa Vezilic and Dragana Ivkovic posting two goals each. Serbia connected on 8 of 29 shots. Shino Magariyama tallied three goals for Japan, which went 7-for-27 from the field.

China downed Australia, 8-6, in the final match of the day. Gao Ao and Sun Hui Zi led a balanced attack for China with two goals each. The Chinese went 8-for-28 from the field. Keesja Gofers paced Australia with a hat trick, while the Aussies converted 6 of 19 shots.
