World University Games, Water Polo: Day Two Competition Complete

BELGRADE, Serbia, July 3. DURING the first day of men's water polo preliminary competition, and the second day overall for water polo at the World University Games, eight matches took place.

France claimed a 13-8 triumph over Mexico in the first match. Romain Harrissart dominated the match for France with four goals in five attempts, while France connected on 13 of 28 shots. Mexico had a more balanced approach with four players scoring two goals each. Overall, Mexico scored on 8 out of 18 attempts.

Greece doubled up Montenegro, 6-3. Ioannis Beristianos led Greece with two goals, while the team went 6-for-25 from the field. Zeljko Doncic tallied two goals to lead Montenegro, which connected on 3 of 27 shots.

Australia whitewashed Canada in a crushing 20-0 conquest. Robert Maitland and John Cotterill each posted a hat trick for the Aussies, which went 20-for-32 from the field. Canada could only get off 16 shots with Aussie goalies Luke Quinlivan and Johnathon Hahn completing a rare shutout.

Russia downed Italy, 8-5, in the next match. Konstantin Stepanyuk, Viktor Vishnyakov and Sergey Lisunov each collected two goals for Russia, which converted on 8 of 26 shots. Five different players scored for Italy, which connected on 5 of 23 attempts.

In the second smashing of the day, Spain demolished China, 22-1. Francesco Sanchez Campos tallied five goals, while teammates David Gonzalez Picon and Francisco Fernandez Miranda each hit the back of the net four times. Spain went 22-for-34 from the field. Li Bin provided China's lone goal.

Hungary completed a 12-3 triumph over Poland in the next match. Krisztian Letay scored four goals for Hungary, which went 12-for-32 from the field. Three different players scored for Poland, which connected on 3 of 25 shots.

In the seventh match of the day, Japan and the United States battled to an 8-8 tie. Thomas Hale tallied a hat trick for the Americans, which shot 8-of-25. Masatoshi Someya, Yusuke Shimizu and Akira Yanase each connected for two goals, while Japan went 8-for-32 overall.

Serbia completed the day with an 11-8 victory over Croatia. Boris Popovic, Djordje Basic and Petar Filipovic connected for two goals each for Serbia, which went 11-for-26 from the field. Marin Ban, Ivan Krizman and Nikola Samodol also tallied two goals each. Croatia finished by converting 8 of 27 shots.
