Mediterranean Games: Aschwin Wildeboer Faber, Alessia Filippi Set Respective National Records -- June 28, 2009

PESCARA, Italy, June 28. THE second evening of long course meter competition witnessed a pair of national records falling at the Mediterranean Games held in Italy.

World-record holder Fred Bousquet ripped off a 21.17 in the men's 50 free, a bit of his global mark of 20.94, setting himself up nicely heading down the stretch towards the World Championships. Countryman Alain Bernard finished second in 21.62, while Italy's Federico Bocchia placed third in 22.05.

France's Malia Metella followed with a triumphant time of 24.88 in the women's 50 free. Italy's Gigliola Tecchio and Cristina Chiuso tied for second with matching times of 25.56.

Spain's Aschwin Wildeboer Faber took a serious run at the European record in the men's 200 back with a time of 1:54.96. The swim came up just short of Arkady Vyatchanin's continental mark of 1:54.93. His time did crush the Spanish record of 1:56.57 set by Martin Lopez-Zubero back in 1991. Italy's Sebastiano Ranfagni placed second in 1:58.59, while compatriot Damiano Lestingi took third in 1:59.96.

Italy's Alessia Filippi touched in 2:08.03 in the women's 200 back to lower her Italian record of 2:08.44 set in March 2009. Spain's Duane Da Rocha Marce finished second in 2:11.73, while France's Alexianne Castel grabbed third in 2:12.43.

Serbia's Ivan Lendjer held off France's Clement Lefert, 51.79 to 51.93, in the men's 100 fly. Slovenia's Peter Mankoc claimed third in 52.06. Italy's Francesca Segat topped the women's 100 fly in 59.13, while France's Diane Bui Duyet pocketed second in 59.24. Spain's Angela San Juan Cisneros placed third in 59.60.
