The Morning Swim Show News, June 26, 2009: Another World Record in Germany, Gemma Spofforth Shines in Scotland

PHOENIX, Arizona, June 26. ANOTHER world record in Germany highlights Friday's news segment on The Morning Swim Show. Following is the complete transcript of the segment, hosted by Peter Busch.

The Germans top our news again today. For the second day in a row, a world record has fallen in Berlin. Today Daniela Samulski broke the record in the 50 back with a 27.61. There's been a lot of controversy surrounding this event this year. At the start of 2009, Australia's Sophie Edington had the record outright with a 27.67. Then China's Zhao Jing tied the record in April. Just a few weeks later, Anastasia Zueva swam a 27.47 at the Russian nationals, but FINA has not ratified the record, since the suit Zueva raced in, the Arena X-glide, was not approved for use at the time.(Click the button on the right to view the video.)

Samulski returned less than an hour later to win the 50 fly with a 26.65.

In the men's 50 back, Helge Meeuw broke the national record in the 50 backstroke with a 24.64.

Johannes Dietrich pulled off a major upset in the men's 50 fly. Not only did he beat three-time Olympian Thomas Rupprath, but he took Rupprath's national record in the process with a 23.43. The record was 23.46.

Over in Glasgow, Scotland, Gemma Spofforth and Stephanie Proud both had great times in the 200 back, but only one could qualify for the team. Spofforth won the race with a new national record of 2:07.5 so she'll swim in Rome…

The Brits will have David Davies and Robbie Renwick in the men's 400 free. Davies won the event today with a 3:48.6, he was already on the team before the meet so the real race was for the second spot, and that went to Renwick who swam a 3:49.92, faster than the second place time at the British trials in March.

Marco Loughran hung on to his spot on the world championship team in the men's 100 back, posting a 54.48, one-tenth ahead of Matthew Clay.

We'll continue to watch results from both meets over the weekend. Britta Steffen will try to lower her 100 free world record in Saturday's finals. Rebecca Adlington also swims the 400 and 800 freestyles, she's the defending Olympic champ in both events. All the results will be on our website, swimmingworld.com.

That's our news segment for today. Join us Monday for our interview with USA water polo star Lauren Wenger, who talks about why she has some unfulfilled dreams in international competition.
