NCAA Div. III: Hope Keeps String Alive, Defeats Calvin -- January 28, 2001

January 27. THE Flying Dutch women's swim team extended the longest winning streak in Hope College athletic history by edging Calvin 126-117 Saturday in the season's final MIAA dual meet.

Coach John Patnott's Dutch extended their eight-season-long MIAA dual meet winning streak to 49 in a row. The Dutch were 6-0 in MIAA duals this year.

Senior Betsy VandenBerg was a triple winner in her final collegiate dual meet, capturing the 200 individual medley (2:12.50), 200 backstroke (2:14.26), and 200 breaststroke (2:22.74).

Double winners included sophomore Erin VandenBerg in the 1000 freestyle (10:58.91) and 500 freestyle (5:19.94); freshman Michelle Smith in the 200 freestyle (1:57.69) and 200 butterfly (2:17.38) and junior diver Brooke Vivian, one-meter (229.80) and three-meters (201.90).

The Flying Dutch men's team ended their dual meet season with a season-ending 152-85 victory over rival Calvin Saturday.

Coach John Patnott's Dutchmen posted a 4-1 record to finish second behind Kalamazoo (5-0) in the dual meet standings. Hope was 5-1 overall.

The Dutchmen used their depth with seven swimmers capturing firsts. Hope's only double winner was sophomore Brian Slagh in the 200 freestyle (1:45.13)
and 500 freestyle (4:48.36).

Other Hope winners were freshman BJ Schoettle, 1,000 freestyle (10:07.97); senior Scott Vroegindewey, 50 freestyle (:22.12); sophomore Dan Bouwens, 200
butterfly (2:01.38); sophomore Tim DeHaan, 100 freestyle (:48.61); Ian Kobes, 200 backstroke (1:59.31); and Josh Boss, 200 breaststroke (2:19.92).
