Rice Swimming Announces Fourth Signee To Incoming Class

HOUSTON, Texas, June 19. RICE head swim coach Seth Huston announced on Friday (June 19) the Owls' incoming class of signees for the 2009-2010 season has been completed with the addition of St. Louis, Mo., native Kim Steinhouse.

Steinhouse, a freestyle sprinter at the high school and club levels, joins fellow signees Danielle Spence (San Diego, Calif.) Kylee Talwar (Jacksonville, Fla.) and Stephanie Wei (San Jose, Calif.) to round-out the Owls' incoming class. Steinhouse swam in the U.S. Junior Nationals last December and was a member of the Parkway West Swim Club that won the national championship in the 400-freestyle relay. Individually she has been a national qualifier in the sprints with a host of school records at Parkway West High School in St. Louis.

Coach Huston stated that Stenhouse is talented and complements the other members of the incoming class. As a former head coach at Truman State in Missouri prior to coming to Rice, Huston is well-aware of the club and high school talent-level of the recruits and coaches throughout the midwest.

"Kim comes from St. Louis, Mo., my old stomping ground," Huston said. "She swims for high school coaching legend Lane Page at Parkway West and Nick Rudich of Parkway Swim Club, one of the best club teams in the midwest. She is the final addition to a great class. I believe each of these young women has the ability and mental toughness that it takes to compete at the highest levels of NCAA Division I swimming. This will be a great class to add to our momentum of moving into our new Rice swim facility later this year."

The signees' first semester at Rice begins in August of 2009. That is close to the same time the University will cut the ribbon on the new Gibbs Recreation & Wellness Center, an on-campus facility featuring a new state-of-the-art 50-meter competition pool that will serve as the new home for the Owls' swim team.
