Texas A&M Trio Voted to ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American Teams

COLLEGE STATION, Texas, June 12. TEXAS A&M swimmers Ella Doerge (Clive, Iowa), Emily Neal (Plano), and Sarah Woods (Birmingham, Ala.) were all named to varying 2009 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American teams, the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced on Thursday.

Both Neal and Woods were voted onto the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American Second Team in the Women's At-Large category for the University Division while Doerge was voted onto to the Third Team. All three Aggie juniors carry a cumulative grade-point average of 4.0. Neal and Woods are majoring in political science and chemical engineering, respectively, while Doerge is majoring in genetics.

Fifteen women were named to the first team, including three-time NCAA golfer of the year Amanda Blumenhurst of Duke, 2008 U.S. swimming Olympian Elaine Breeden of Stanford, 2000 U.S. gymnastics Olympian Courtney Kupets of Georgia, and 2008 U.S. diving Olympian Christina Loukas of Indiana.

Neal and Woods were voted onto the second team along with 13 other women while Doerge was joined on the third team by 14 female athletes. A total of 45 women were voted onto the three Academic All-American teams of the 82 possible who were eligible for the honor after being named to the Academic All-District First Team last month.

The Academic All-American at-large teams were voted upon by the CoSIDA Board of Directors and the members of the CoSIDA Academic All-American Committee. Each school was allowed to nominate a maximum of three athletes total among the sports of bowling, crew, fencing, field hockey, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, tennis, swimming & diving, and water polo. Athletes were required to carry a 3.3 cumulative GPA, be at least a sophomore academically and completed at least one full year at their current school, be a starter or important reserve, have competed in at least 50 percent of the team's competitions and be nominated by a dues-paying member of CoSIDA.

Doerge, Neal, and Woods instantly double the number of women's swimming & diving athletes named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American teams in the A&M program's history. Only Sandra Goeking (Second Team, 1985), Jennifer Guillory (First Team, 1996), and Julia Wilkinson (Third Team, 2008) have been named to one of the three teams prior to this season.
