Chip Peterson Named Academic All-America

CHAPEL HILL, North Carolina, June 10. NORTH Carolina's Chip Peterson, a member of the Tar Heel swimming and diving team, has been named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America men's third team for at-large sports. A junior biology major from Pine Knoll Shores, N.C., Peterson carries a 3.85 grade point average. He is the sixth UNC men's swimmer to earn Academic All-America honors and the first since Stephen Mohr was named to the first team in 2003.

The Academic All-America men's at-large teams include student-athletes who participate in the sports of includes the sports of fencing, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, swimming & diving, tennis, volleyball, water polo and wrestling. To be a candidate for the honor, a student-athlete must be a starter or key reserve and must carry a cumulative grade point average of 3.3 or better.

In addition to his academic achievement, Peterson is one of the top distance swimmers in the college ranks. He finished 10th in the 1650-yard freestyle at the 2009 NCAA Championships to earn honorable mention All-America honors, and also qualified in the 500 free and 400 IM. He qualified for the 2008 Olympic Trials in four events and has set school records in the 1000 free and 1650 free as a freshman. A gold medalist at the 2007 Pan-Am Games, he has been named to the Dean's List, ACC Academic Honor Roll and All-ACC Academic Team.
