Mare Nostrum, Canet: Swift Sprints, Strong Distance Frees Highlight First Night; German Record Falls

CANET, France, June 9. THE first night of long course meter action at the Mare Nostrum in Canet came to a close with plenty of 50s in the strokes along with distance freestyle events being contested. Additionally, the women's 50 back German record fell.

Russia's Yuri Prilukov captured a meet record with a time of 15:08.79 in the men's 1500 free. Anthony Pannier finished second in 15:22.38, while Mexico's Daniel Delgadillo placed third in 15:55.79. South Africa's Wendy Trott grabbed the women's 800 free crown in 8:32.70. Sophie Huber took second in 8:33.91 with Hannah Miley claiming third in 8:36.32.

Australia's Benjamin Treffers cruised to a pair of meet records in the men's 50 back. First, he posted a 25.49 in prelims before racing to victory in the finale with a 25.14. Liam Tancock settled for second in 25.34, while Camille Lacourt wound up third in 25.52.

Russia's Anastasia Zueva gave her world record a bit of a run in the women's 50 back. She won the event title in 27.80, off her global mark of 27.47. Germany's Daniela Samulski set the German record in the event with a second-place 27.97. The swim broke Janine Pietsch's 2005 standard of 28.19. Australia's Sophie Edington finished third in 28.65.

After Israel's Michael Malul clocked a meet-record time of 27.90 in prelims, Mark Gangloff of the U.S. raced to victory in the men's 50 breast finals with a 27.62. The performance came up short of Ed Moses' American record of 27.39 set in 2001. Australia's Christian Sprenger finished second in 27.93, while South Africa's Cameron van der Burgh took third in 28.06.

Valentina Artemyeva held off Russian teammate Yuliya Efimova, 30.67 to 30.88, for the women's 50 breast title. Germany's Kerstin Vogel placed third in 31.63.
