NCAA Division 1 Top 25 Rankings as of 1/23/01

The Speedo/CSCAA Top 25 list has changed over the past two weeks, as home seasons started to close and seniors said good-bye to the home pools they had swum in for four years.
In fact, one entire team said good-bye to its pool-Purdue retired 61-year-old Lambert Pool. Indiana University’s women’s team spoiled the party, however, defeating Purdue by a score of 161-144. Indiana clinched the victory on the next-to-last event. Three pool records were bettered-two by Purdue’s Gyongyver Lakos (200 free, 1:50.20; 100 free, 51.02) and one by Purdue’s 400 free relay (3:28.04).
Florida’s Janelle Atkinson grabbed the top spot in the 1650 free (16:10.74) on Jan. 13, when No. 10 Florida edged No. 8 Texas 152-148. Teammate Jamie Ellis won the 400 IM in 4:19.95 to grab a spot on the Top 25 list.
Arizona’s Amanda Beard and Stanford’s Tara Kirk finished 1-2 in the 200 breast and captured the top two spots in the nation as well. During the third-ranked Wildcats’ 135.5-107.5 win over the No. 4 Cardinal, Beard posted a 2:11.02 for the No. 1 ranking in the event, followed by Kirk’s 2:11.70. Misty Hyman swam well for Stanford as well, finishing No. 2 in the nation in the 200 fly (1:56.25) and sixth in the 200 IM (2:01.20). Stanford’s men’s squad turned the tables on the Wildcats, winning 147-96. Swimming well for the Cardinal were Rob Canales (200 IM, 1:49.58), Steven Brown (200 fly, 1:48.01) and Adam Messner (4:24.22). Placing first in events for the Wildcats were junior Roland Schoeman (50 free, 20.09; 100 free, 44.69) and senior Tyler Painter (1000 free, 9:07.53)
Texas sophomore Chris Kemp leads the nation in the 200 free (1:35.93). Kemp placed first in that event during Texas’ 161-133 victory over Georgia. Chris also placed ninth in the 1000 free (9:07.85). Top-10 times were achieved by the Longhorns’ Nate Dusing (100 fly, 47.93; 200 back, 1:44.88) as well as the Bulldogs’ Kyle Salyards (100 breast, 55.46; 200 breast, 1:58.82), Andrew Mahaney (1000 free, 9:07.46) and Marc Lindsay (200 back, 1:44.64)
In a tri-meet among Michigan, Penn State and Purdue, Michigan came out on top against both teams (Michigan 128-Penn State 114; Michigan 183-Purdue 60). Penn State defeated Purdue 171-72. Penn State’s John Retrun has the ninth-fastest time in the 200 free (1:37.53); close behind is Michigan’s Dan Ketchum (1:38.02). Michigan swimmers finishing first in their events included Chris Thompson (500 free, 4:22.87; 1000 free, 9:11.23), Scott Werner (200 breast, 1:59.67; 200 IM, 1:50.14) and Garrett Mangieri (100 free, 45.04)
