Mare Nostrum, Barcelona: Plenty More Meet Records Fall in Spain

BARCELONA, Spain, June 7. THE final day of long course meter swimming at the Mare Nostrum Barcelona stop featured several more meet standards taking a tumble.

Anastasia Zueva clipped the meet record in the women's 50 back with a time of 27.82. That performance beat Sophie Edington's 27.83 set last year. Daniela Samulski placed second in 28.15 with Edington taking third in 28.33.

Libby Trickett provided the first sub-54:00 time in meet history in the women's 100 free with a 53.87. That readout cleared her 2006 record of 54.17 set as Libby Lenton. Felicity Galvez placed second in 54.79 with Dorothea Brandt placing third in 54.99.

In a stocked men's 50 free finale, Cesar Cielo blazed to a meet record of 21.97. That time erased Eamon Sullivan's 2008 mark of 22.05. Cullen Jones (22.17) and Fred Bousquet (22.17) tied for second, while Stefan Nystrand finished fourth in 22.38.

Andrew Lauterstein later posted a 51.77 in the men's 100 fly. The swim crushed the meet record of 52.44 set by Adam Pine last year. Mike Cavic placed second in 52.09 with Simon Sjodin taking third in 53.37.

Nikita Lobintsev knocked a second from the men's 200 free meet record with a winning time of 1:47.30. The time smashed Pieter van den Hoogenband's 2003 standard of 1:48.36. Alexander Sukhorukov touched second in 1:48.06 with Ross Davenport finishing third in 1:49.04.

World-record holder Joanne Jackson demolished the meet record in the women's 400 free with a 4:05.90. She blasted through the 4:07.60 set by Camelia Potec in 2004. Bronte Barratt (4:12.25) and Cassandra Patten (4:12.79) rounded out the top three.

In other action, Marcos Rivera Miranda won the men's 1500 free in 15:22.49, while Daniel Fogg (15:29.97) and Ignacio Fernandez Ordonez (15:32.83) finished second and third.

Mark Gangloff touched out Christian Sprenger, 27.87 to 27.91, in the men's 50 breast. Cameron van der Burgh placed third in 27.92. Therese Alshammar followed with a 26.06 in the women's 50 fly. Marieke Guehrer touched second in 26.13 with Trickett taking third in 26.18.

James Goddard earned the men's 400 IM title in 4:23.70. Chad Le Clos touched second in 4:24.53, while Joseph Roebuck took third in 4:24.57. Arkady Vyatchanin picked up the men's 100 back triumph in 55.19. Stanislav Donets (55.36) and Liam Tancock (55.61) completed the podium.

Yuliya Efimova snared the women's 100 breast in 1:07.66, while Mirna Jukic finished second in 1:08.12. Valentina Artemyeva took third in 1:09.53. Zueva pocketed a second gold with a 2:10.04 in the women's 200 back. Lizzie Simmonds took second in 2:10.94 with Duane Da Rocha Marce placing third in 2:11.94.

Sprenger garnered the men's 200 breast title in 2:12.35 with Marco Koch (2:13.42) and William Diering (2:14.47) touching second and third. Jessicah Schipper captured the women's 200 fly in 2:09.72. Mireia Belmonte Garcia (2:10.27) and Judit Ignacio Sorribes (2:12.13) placed second and third.

Hannah Miley posted a 2:12.29 in the women's 200 IM, while Keri-Anne Payne took second in 2:13.85. Belmonte Garcia touched third in 2:14.78.
