South Africa Water Polo Stars Hard at Training for World Championships

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa, June 5. SOUTH Africa's Water Polo stars will be out to impress national coach Vladimir Trninic at the men's training camp at St John's College in Johannesburg from June 12-14, after which the final list of 13 players to compete at the FINA World Aquatics Championships in Rome, Italy will be handed to the Swimming SA board for approval.

Following their excellent showing in the African leg of the FINA World League held in Morocco last month, Duncan Woods' team will be keen to prove that they have the potential to hold their own against the best water polo sides in the world, and the squad of 17 players will be hard at work in an effort to ensure their places among the final line up for action in Rome from July 19-August 1.

"Swimming SA is delighted to send a national men's and women's team to compete in the water polo competitions at the FINA World Aquatics Championships in Rome, and I am sure that they will make use of this opportunity to showcase their skills on the world stage," said Swimming SA CEO Shaun Adriaanse.

"The women's national team will be finalised and handed to the Swimming SA board following the training camp to be held at the Clifton High School in Durban from June 13-16."

The men's provisional list of 17 players announced by Swimming SA, who will take part in the national team training camp, are:

Swimming SA also announced the national junior women's team that will compete at the FINA World Junior Water Polo Championships in Khanty-Mansyisk, Russia starting on August 9.

The national junior women's team will train at the St Peters School in Gauteng from June 12-14.

Swimming SA will finalise the national men's junior team, for competition at the FINA World Junior Water Polo Championships in Sibenik, Croatia, following the national squad camp to be held at the Clifton High School in Durban this weekend.
