USA Women’s Senior National Water Polo Team Defeats Canada 10-5 In FINA World League Prelim

NEWPORT BEACH, California, June 1. THE Women's Senior National Team bounced back from a loss to Canada on Saturday evening to defeat Team Canada 10-5 in the FINA Women's World League Prelim for the Americas earlier tonight at Corona del Mar High School in Newport Beach, CA. Lauren Wenger scored three goals en route to the victory, the first official win for new Head Coach Adam Krikorian.

Team USA got off to a phenomenal start building a 4-0 lead after the first quarter. It started early when Brenda Villa found the net less than two minutes into the game. This was followed just a few moments later when Tanya Gandy ripped the net for a 2-0 lead. Villa came back with another goal just under the two minute mark, and Annika Dries capped the period with a tally to complete the four goal output.

In the second stanza it was more of the same at Team USA jumped out to 6-0 lead on consecutive goals by Wenger. Canada finally got on the board at the 2:24 mark when Katrina Monton scored out in front, making the score 6-1. That was the score coming out of halftime as Canada looked to rally with back to back goals. Krystina Alogbo and Rosanna Tomiuk scored to close within 6-3. Team USA didn't wait long to rebound as Kelly Rulon and Lauren Silver each lit the lamp to build an 8-3 lead after the third quarter.

In the fourth quarter Wenger scored the third of her goals to put USA up 9-3. A Jessica Steffens goal made it 10-3 with 3:06 remaining and this contest was safely in hand. Canada would add two late goals but it would not be enough as Team USA came away with the win.

Betsey Armstrong went the whole way in net for Team USA turning aside a host of shots in the win, while Rachel Riddell went the distance for Team Canada. Next up for both of these squads is the FINA World League Super Final in Kirishi, Russia in early June.
