Italian Long Course Nationals: Alessia Filippi Sets Italian Record

PESCARA, Italy, May 29. ALESSIA Filippi provided the fireworks for the evening at the Italian Long Course National Championships held in Pescara.

Filippi smashed the women's 200 IM national record with a winning time of 2:11.25. That effort knocked nearly a second from Francesca Segat's March record of 2:12.20. Segat settled for second in 2:13.07 with Erica Buratto placing third in 2:13.93.

Michele Cosentino won the men's 200 fly in a touch-out triumph over Italian record holder Francesco Vespe, 1:56.97 to 1:56.99. Both swimmers came up short of Vespe's national record time of 1:56.33 from March. Niccolo Beni claimed third in 1:57.22.

Martina Rita Caramignoli took home the women's 800 free title in 8:36.98, while Giulia Bolgiani placed second in 8:40.69. Stefanie Pirozzi rounded out the top three in 8:46.73.

Loris Facci followed with a touch-out victory of his own in the men's 200 breast. Facci beat Edoardo Giorgetti to the wall, 2:10.49 to 2:10.54. Paolo Bossini, the national record holder with a 2:08.98 from the 2008 Beijing Olympics, finished third in 2:11.67.

Enrico Catalano just missed Mirco Di Tora's national record in the men's 100 back with a 54.15. Di Tora owns the standard with a 54.05 from Beijing. Damiano Lestingi took second in 54.23, while Di Tora wound up third in 54.35.

Cristina Chiuso downed Laura Letrari by the slimmest of margins with a .01 second triumph in the women's 50 free, 25.67 to 25.68. Livia Travaglini claimed third in 25.75.

In semifinals, Christian Galenda paced the men's 100 free in 48.85, while Silvia Di Pietro topped the women's 100 fly in 58.90.
