NCAA Div. I: Cal, Arizona Split

TUCSON, AZ., Jan.19 COACH Nort Thornton's hungry Cal Bears gobbled up the Arizona Wildcats
here this afternoon by a 129-117 margin, but the Cal women were drowned by the Lady 'Cats, 146-97. And what was supposed to be a "showdown at the ol' water hole" between the nation's two premier Division I male sprinters, double defending NCAA champ Anthony Ervin of Cal and Wildcat Olympian Roland Schoeman turned into something of a dud as Ervin swept to easy wins in the 50-100 frees.

Olympic co-gold medalist last September in the 50 free, Ervin is disproving the old adage about "winning the Big One" and then having your career tail off in a hurry as he splashed to one of his best unshaved 50 efforts (20.06 to Schoeman's 20.20) and then took the 100 (44.22 to Schoeman's 45.76, which got him the show spot).

Ervin set an American record at last year's NCAAs in the 50 free and his winning 100 ranks him high on the all-time list too. The next showdown between these two sprint giants will take the first weekend of March @ Belmont Plaza during the Pac-10s, then it's on to College Station for the NCAAs and, possibly, a showdown again in July (with perhaps Australia's Michael Klim, Russia's Alexander Popov and — lest we forget! — double Olympic champ Pietr van den Hoogenband) at the World Championships.

Both Ervin and Schoeman will be gunning for ex-Cal great Matt Biondi's NCAA-Championshi precords of 19.15-41.80 this season. The standards were set at the 1987 NCAAs in Austin (Biondi's senior season). Schoeman is NCAA 50 free record-holder off his 19.07 from last season's Longhorn Invitational. The American-U.S. Open record is 19.05 by ex-UCLA great Tom Jager.

Other standout performers for the Bears vs. the 'Cats included frosh backstroker Alex Lim (1:47.88 to win the 200) and Swedish import Peter Aronsson, who won the 200 IM in 1:52.51.

On the distaff side Cal rookie Natalie Coughlin was the standout performer with triple wins in the 200 back-fly (1:58.18 for both) and a 1:47.69 200 free win. Coughlin is national leader in the 200 free, 100 back, 100-200 fly and 200 IM.

Wildcat Olympian Amanda Beard went a seasonal best 2:02.96 to win the 200 IM and scored a double off her 2:14.59 200 breast victory.
