Italian Long Course Nationals: Ilaria Scarcella, Roberta Panara, Silvia Di Pietro, Mattia Nalesso Post Italian Records

PESCARA, Italy, May 27. SEVERAL more national records took a tumble during the second night of action at the Italian Long Course Nationals held in Pescara.

The women's 100 breast Italian record fell in subsequent semifinal rounds. First, Roberta Panara topped the first semifinal with a 1:08.01 to clip Chiara Boggiatto's national standard of 1:08.09 set in April. Ilaria Scarcella, however, had much bigger plans for the record as she crushed the mark with a 1:06.99 during the second semifinal round. Boggiatto also cleared the former record with a 1:07.75 for the second seed in finals. Scarcella's next target could be Yuliya Efimova's European record of 1:05.80.

Silvia Di Pietro downed the women's 50 fly national record twice during the day. Di Pietro first posted a time of 26.25 during prelims to beat Cristina Maccagnola's national standard of 26.51 set in March. Di Pietro then won the title in 26.10 during finals. Elena Gemo took second in 26.54 with Chiara Mazzoni finishing third in 26.88.

The men's 100 fly featured a pair of swimmers eclipsing the national record. Mattia Nalesso touched out Lorenzo Benatti, 52.49 to 52.59, to erase Benatti's Italian record of 52.66 set in April. Rudy Goldin finished third in 52.73.

Erica Buratto claimed the women's 100 free in 55.72 while Renata Rabiola Spagnolo took second in 55.91. Flavia Zoccari placed third in 56.12. Gianluca Maglia followed in the men's 200 free with a touch-out victory over Marco Belotti, 1:47.20 to 1:47.22. Emiliano Brembilla finished just behind in 1:47.37 for third.

Mirco Di Tora missed his national record by the slimmest of margins in the men's 50 back with a 25.00 for the win. He owns the Italian standard with a 24.99 from March. Enrico Catalano placed second in 25.37 with Sebastiano Ranfagni touching third in 25.60.

Francesca Segat took home the women's 400 IM in 4:42.46, while Francesca Aceto (4:43.67) and Elisa Pasini (4:44.42) completed the top three. Luca Angelo Dioli picked up the men's 400 IM title in 4:14.75 with Alessio Boggiatto finishing second in 4:14.86. Luca Marin touched third in 4:15.46.

Elena Gemo followed with a winning time of 1:01.10 in the women's 100 back, while Valentina De NArdi took second in 1:02.34. Federica Pellegrini took third in 1:02.63.

In semifinal action, Mattia Pesce paced the men's 100 breast in 1:00.65.
