VANCOUVER, British Columbia, Canada, May 24. THE final night of long course meter swimming at the Mel Zajac Junior International featured a Canadian record falling by the wayside.
During the final event of the meet, the UBC Dolphin foursome of Matt Hawes, Scott Dickens, Brian Johns and Brent Hayden posted a Canadian-record time of 3:40.84 in the men's 400 medley relay. The performance wiped out the previous record of 3:41.14 set last year. It also obliterated the meet-record time of 3:43.92 set in 2004.
Brent Hayden clocked a meet-record time of 49.16 in the men's 100 free. That swim eclipsed the 49.81 set by Colin Russell last year. Joel Greenshields placed second in 51.22 with Rory Biskupski taking third in 51.30.
Katy Murdoch joined Hayden with a meet record of her own in the women's 100 back. She posted a 1:01.82 to crush the 2003 standard (1:02.47) of Erin Gammel. Hanna Kubas finished second in 1:02.53, while Maggie Meyer claimed third in 1:02.56.
Daniel Arnamnart and Matt Hawes both cleared the meet record of 55.68 set by Hawes in 2007 in the men's 100 back. Arnamnart, however, picked up the victory, 54.93 to 55.18. Brian Johns placed third in 57.46.
Ryan Cochrane added to the meet-record barrage with a 15:07.30 in the men's 1500 free. His swim beat his 2007 record of 15:08.25. Kier Maitland placed a distant second in 15:30.18, while Andre Cosgarea took third in 15:42.50.
The U.S. team of Mary Kate McNeilis, Mary Olsen, Haley Lips and Missy Franklin posted a meet-record time of 4:09.25 in the women's 400 medley relay. That time smashed the 4:14.11 set by Manitoba in 2004. The U.S. B team of Madison White, Alisa Finn, Jasmine Tosky and Lauren Perdue also beat the former record with a second-place 4:12.62.
Lindsay Seemann began the final day of action with a victory in the women's 800 free. She posted a time of 8:38.76, while Alex Komarnycky finished second in 8:40.41. Kevyn Peterson completed the top three in 8:49.72.
Annamay Pierse touched out Megan Jendrick, who is nursing a broken leg, in the women's 50 breast, 31.83 to 31.95. Kayla Voytechek grabbed third in 32.15. Scott Dickens then won the men's 50 breast in 28.41. William Colbert (29.40), Matthew Elliott (29.48) and Jason Block (29.48) all finished in the podium.
Tanya Hunks cruised to the win in the women's 200 fly with a time of 2:11.50 with MacKenzie Downing finishing second in 2:12.31. Brenna Maclean wound up third in 2:12.56. Dakota Hodgson snared the men's 200 fly crown in 2:01.35 with Stefan Hirniak placing second in 2:01.80. Ben Hinshaw wrapped up third in 2:02.47.
Ariana Kukors kept on rolling at the meet, as she claimed another top time. This time, she posted a 55.80 to win the women's 100 free. Missy Franklin, 13, took second in 55.85 with Bronte Barratt finishing third in 56.27.
