USA Blue Downs USA White On Second Day Of Fisher Cup Action in Water Polo

LAKE FOREST, California, May 24. THE second day of the Fisher Cup came to a close with USA Blue defeating USA White 12-7 and Canada downing USA Red 11-8. In open tournament action the New York Athletic Club, the Olympic Club, Newport Water Polo Foundation, and Stanford have positioned themselves for the final four.

In the first game of national team action USA Blue was too much for the up and coming USA White as they opened up a 4-0 lead to start the game. It continued in the second quarter as USA Blue built a 7-4 lead at half behind two goals from Layne Beaubien. USA White battled back in the third quarter drawing to within 8-7 thanks to a Zac Monsees score with 5:47 to play. After that goal, the third of the night for Monsees, USA Blue ran off four straight goals, two from Jeff Tyrell to pull away with the 12-7 win. Merrill Moses halted nine shots in the victory, while John Mann and Tyrell led with three goals each.

The last game of the night featured Team Canada against USA Red with the two teams battling to a 2-2 tie after the first. In the second stanza Canada expanded to a 5-2 advantage, and then went up 7-3 with 6:18 to go in the third quarter after a score by Kevin Graham. USA Red fought back to within one at 8-7 by the end of the third thanks to two scores from JP MacDonnell.

In the fourth quarter Canada would be able to keep USA Red at arm's length by going up 9-7, then 10-8, and finally 11-8. Robin Randell halted nine shots for Canada while Graham contributed four goals on the night. Matthew Rapacz was stellar in net for USA Red posting six saves. USA Red is back in action tomorrow afternoon against USA Blue at 1:45pm. Prior to that USA White and Canada will duel at 12:30pm.
