Fred Bousquet Sets New U.S. Open Record At The Charlotte UltraSwim; Freshman Stephanie Horner Takes Gold In The 400m Medley Relay

AUBURN, Alabama, May 16. FORMER Auburn sprinter and current world record holder Fred Bousquet upped the bar once again, setting a new U.S. Open record following his, 21.33, first-place showing in Saturday night's 50-meter freestyle finals at the 2009 Charlotte UltraSwim. Bousquet recently became the first man in history to swim the 50m free in under 21 seconds, dropping a 20.94 in last month's French nationals.

The Charlotte UltraSwim is held at the Mecklenburg County Aquatics Center in Charlotte, N.C., from May 14-17. All events except the 800 and 1500 Freestyles will be conducted on a preliminaries and finals basis.

Auburn freshman Stephanie Horner earned gold as the leadoff leg to the Club Natation relay squad, timing in at 1:36.84 on way to a 4:11.48 team time. Horner represented her native Canada at the 2008 Olympic Games.

Also taking gold was former Tiger and 2008 Olympian Eric Shanteau. The 11-time NCAA All-American won the 200m breast finals by nearly a five-second margin, clocking in at 2:09.71, just shy of the meet record. Taking second in the 200m breast was former Auburn swimmer Mark Gangloff (2:14.22). The pair placed first and second in Friday's 100m breast finals.

In the women's 100m back, Auburn was led by junior Alana Dillette (1:03.10) in fourth, followed by senior Emile Ewing (1:03.65) and sophomore Erica Meissner (1:03.49) in seventh and ninth places. On the men's side, freshman Max Murphy (55.69) and sophomore Jared White (59.53) took fifth and eighth.

Junior Abby MacGregor led the way for the Tigers in the women's 200m breast, hitting the wall in 2:35.05 for a sixth-place showing. Junior Ava Ohlgren (2:37.38) and sophomore Melanie Roberts (2:39.62) placed 11th and 16th, respectively.

Auburn stacked the men's 50m free finals with six swimmers holding down the 16 lanes of A and B finals. Coming in behind Bousquet were former Tigers George Bovell (22.01) and Bryan Lundquist (22.53) in third and fourth, sophomore Jared White (23.06) in seventh, junior Tyler McGill (23.20) in ninth and freshman Karl Krug (23.53) in 11th.

On the women's side, freshman Arianna Vanderpool-Wallace (25.87) and sophomore Caitlin Geary (26.26) placed sixth and seventh.

Junior Maggie Bird placed fourth in the women's 400m free, hitting the wall in 4:15.96. The Muncie, Ind., native also placed fourth in Thursday's 800m free finals. Sophomore Micah Martindale (4:21.61) took 15th in the 400. For the men, junior Will Dove placed 12th with a 4:01.99.

Sophomore Melanie Roberts (2:17.08) placed 14th in the women's 200m fly finals while McGill (2:04.91) took 16th in men's action.

Action continues Sunday at eh Charlotte UltraSwim with prelims and finals for the women's 1,500m free, men's 800 m free, women's and men's 200 IM, women's and men's 200 back and women's and men's 100 free.
