Maria Lenk Trophy: Monique Ferreira, Nicolas Oliveira, Kaio Almeida, Guilherme Guido Break South American Records

RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil, May 6. THE second night of preliminary long course meter swimming at the Maria Lenk Trophy featured a few more South American records going up on the board.

Monique Ferreira began the second night of preliminary action with a South American record time of 1:59.78 in the women's 200 free. The effort beat her record of 2:00.62 set in March 2008. She looks to be the heavy favorite in the event as Ana Carolina Santos qualified second in 2:03.30.

Nicolas Oliveira picked up the second South American record of the night with a 1:46.90 to qualify first in the men's 200 free. The time crushed the former record of 1:47.87 set by Rodrigo Castro at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Lucas Salatta (1:48.61) and Castro (1:49.82) will bracket Oliveira in finals.

Gabriella Silva set a meet record with a time of 58.25 in the women's 100 fly, just missing her South American record of 58.00 set in Beijing. Paula Ferreira qualified a distant second in 58.85.

Gabriel Mangabeira posted a time of 51.73 in the men's 100 fly coming up just short of Albert Subirats' South American record of 51.71, but breaking Kaio Almeida's national record of 51.99. But, Almeida trumped Mangabeira as an exhibition swimmer the next heat with a sterling time of 51.64 to walk away with the South American standard. Henrique Martins also broke 52 with a second-seeded 51.93.

Fabiola Molina took down the meet record in the women's 50 back with a time of 28.28, just off her South American record of 28.22 set in September 2008. Etiene Medeiros finished second in 28.65, while Fernanda Alvarenga qualified third in 28.90.

In the men's 50 back, Guilherme Guido raced to a winning time of 24.79 to break his listed South American record time of 25.04 set last year. Guido's next target is the 24.33 global standard of Randall Bal. Daniel Orzechowski touched second in 25.56, while Glauber Silva earned third in 25.88.

Joanna Maranhao eased through the women's 400 IM qualifying with a top time of 4:40.96, while Larissa Cieslak (4:55.60) and Kristel Kobrich (4:59.27) finished behind her.

Diogo Yabe topped the men's 400 IM qualifying with a time of 4:19.18, while Henrique Rodrigues finished second in 4:22.75. Thiago Pereira, the South American record holder with a 4:11.14 to his credit, qualified third in 4:17.13.
