Ohio State Claims Overall High Point National Championship Synchronized Swimming Title

PALO ALTO, California, May 3. THE 2009 U.S. Synchronized Swimming National Championships concluded today with the finals competition held at the Avery Aquatic Center on the campus of Stanford University. The Ohio State University scored 43 points en route to the overall high point national championship title. Santa Clara followed with 37 points while Walnut Creek posted 19. Host team, Stanford University, grabbed fourth with 17 points.

In the finals of the solo competition, Barb Nesbitt posted a mark of 93.750, to be crowned the 2009 U.S. National Champion. Natalia Tarasova of Canisius College took home the silver medal with a score of 93.583 while Santa Clara's Mary Killman grabbed the bronze medal with a 93.000.

In today's duet action, Ohio State's Becky Kim and Meghan Kinney (93.750) took the top spot on the medal stand, barely edging out Santa Clara's Mary Killman and Layla Smith (93.583). Natalia Tarasova and Yulia Shepeleva of Canisius College claimed third place (93.000).

Santa Clara reigned supreme in the team competition with a score of 94.083. The Ohio State University followed with a 93.833, while Stanford University grabbed third with a mark of 93.083.

More than 100 elite athletes competed for national titles in the solo, duet and team events in the nation's most prestigious competition. The 2009 U.S. National Championships marked the 64th year of national competition in the duet and team events and the 60th year of solo competition. Synchronized swimming requires a combination of strength, precision, grace and teamwork, and is considered a culmination of swimming, gymnastics and dance.
