Jerry Foley Named Head Coach at Susquehanna

SELINSGROVE, Pennsylvania, April 30. JERRY Foley has been named as the head coach of Susquehanna University's men's and women's swimming & diving teams, and Director of Aquatics. On June 1, he will become the third person to assume the coaching position in Susquehanna's history.

"Jerry comes to us with a wealth of education and experience," said the university's Director of Athletics Pam Samuelson. "We think he's going to be a perfect fit at Susquehanna, and we know that the swimming & diving programs are in good hands."

Foley comes to Susquehanna from nearby Lewisburg Area High School and NCAA Division I Bucknell University. He has been Lewisburg's head boys' and girls' swimming coach since November 2007. He coached Bucknell's swimmers and divers from 1998 to 2006.

He has been the head associate swimming coach of the Sunbury, Pa., branch of the Greater Susquehanna Valley YMCA since October 2006. He has also worked since August 2006 as a staff recruiter for Geisinger Center for Health Research in Danville, Pa.

He was an assistant swimming coach and physical education instructor for the Division I United States Military Academy from 1994 to 1998 and the head coach of Division II Adelphi University from 1989 to 1994. He also served as a physical education instructor and the aquatic director while at Adelphi.

Foley was also the head coach of the nationally oriented Long Island Aquatic Club in Merrick, N.Y., during his tenure at Adelphi.

From 1986 to 1989, he worked as the aquatic director and assistant swimming coach at Deer Park High School in Deer Park, N.Y., and the head coach of Deer Park Aquatics, a community-based program.

Foley graduated with honors from the United States Merchant Marine Academy with a Bachelor of Science degree in engineering in June 1984. He received his Master of Arts in physical education from Adelphi in January 1990.

Foley led the Bucknell men to a Patriot League championship in 2003 and the women to Patriot championships in 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2006. He helped the U.S. Military Academy win men's Patriot titles in 1995, 1996, 1997 and 1998.

Foley replaces Dan Phillips, who led the SU swimming & diving teams for one season during the past academic year. Phillips replaced the late G. Edward "Ged" Schweikert III, who died June 15, 2008, after succumbing to cancer.
