Jamaica Performs Well at Carifta Swimming Championships Held in Aruba

JAMAICA, April 26. JAMAICA finished fifth at the recent CARIFTA Swimming Championships held in Aruba from April 16-19. Jamaica home to Olympians Janelle (2000, 2004), Jevon (2004, 2008) and Alia Atkinson (2004, 2008) finished with 32 medals 8 gold, 12silver and 12 bronze medals.

Top male performer was 11-12 standout Timothy Wynter with two gold medals and two silvers. His gold medals came in the 50 metre backstroke where he lowered his own national record of 31.27 and the championship standard of 31.16 from the heats of 30.29 to win in 30.37 in the finals.

This time would have placed him second overall in the United States for boys aged 12 years old. He then took the top spot in the 200 metre backstroke lowering the 14 year old record by Ramon James of 2:33.07. He first registered 2:28.34 before crushing the field by more than seven seconds with a time of 2:23.09 which would have placed him 4th in the US for the event. His runner up time of 28.33 for the 50 metre butterfly set yet another national record chopping a second off Jason Adams four year old record of 29.33 and would have him first in the US.

Wynter's final medal came in the 100 metre backstroke where his second placed time, which would have him seventh in the America, broke yet another of James records lowering the national record from 1:07.43 to 1:06.45.

The top female performer was 11-12 female standout Danielle Boothe who landed three gold and three silvers. All but two medal winning times were national records. She took the 200 metre breaststroke in 2:49.73 lowering the championship record of 2:52.69 and her own standard of 2:53.86 set at the national age group championships held in February.

Boothe swam the 50 metre butterfly in 29.97 getting by the record of fellow Jamaican age group star Kendese Nangle (Blue Seals Swim Club) of 30.80 and her heats Games record of 30.21. The time is a ninth place position in the US and the 100 metre breastroke in 1:19.89 of Octavia Gray (Marlins Swim Club) of 1:20.64.

Boothe touched the wall in second in the 200IM in 2:31.99 crushing the record of Olympian and Texas A and M star, Alia Atkinson and under the Games time of 2:32.35 of Trinidadian Olympian Cerian Gibbes. She swam the 50 breastroke 36.11 just missing her record of 36.06 at the National championships and the 200 metre backstroke in 2:41.32.

Other gold medal performances were seen in the 13-14 girls age group by Brittany Kenny 200 backstroke 2:30.28, 11-12 boys 400 medley relay 4:45.02(Wynter, Antoine Young, Sidrell Williams and Dominic Brown), 13-14 girls 400 medley relay of Kenny,Gray,Royal-Eatmon and Nangle in a Games and national record of 4:42.95 lowering the national record of 4:46.29 set last year by the team of Nangle, Victoria Ho, Alexia Royal-Eatmon and Raynae Hall.
