Hungary’s Szeged Beton Wins 2009 LEN Men’s Water Polo Trophy

ROME, Italy, April 23. LEN, the League of European Swimming that has oversight of water polo in Europe, has announced the winner of its 2009 LEN Men's Water Polo Trophy.

The Hungarian Club of Szeged Beton VE beat Panionios GSS of Athens in a two-game series that ended with a penalty shootout, 17-13. Previously, Panionios beat Szeged Beton 8-6 on April 6. The win was the first European Club title for the Hungarian-based squad.

Four clubs also qualified for the Euro League Final Four to be held in Rijeka, Croatia May 22-23.: HAVK Mladost (CRO), JUG Croatia Osiguranje (CRO), A.S.D. Pro Recco (ITA), and V.K. Primorac Kotor (MNE).

Mladost overcame a three-goal deficit with an 11-6 victory over Olympiakos Piraeus, while Jug beat Partizan Belgrade, 11-7. Pro Recco, the defending Euro League Champion, lost to TEVA Vasas Plaket, with an unreported score, but still qualified due to an 11-8 victory over Budapest. Meanwhile, Primorac Kotor beat Jadran Harceg Novi in an unreported score after earning a 12-12 draw in the first match.
