Irish Long Course National Championships: Plenty of Irish Records

DUBLIN, Ireland, April 20. THIS weekend, the Irish held their Irish Long Course National Championships in Dublin, and there were plenty of new Irish records put into the books by the end of the meet.

On the first day, the foursome of Kevin Stacey, Conor Hughes, Sean Redmon and Seamus Stacey took down the men's 400 free relay national record with a 3:29.24. The swim crushed Belfast's time of 3:33.77.

The second day of swimming, Fiona Doyle cleared the women's 100 free national record in prelims with a 56.92. That time nipped Julie Douglas' 2002 record of 56.97. Claire Dawson then posted a time of 56.63 in the semifinal round to claim the record.

Andrew Meegan checked in with an 8:20.00 in the men's 800 free to smash his previous record of 8:23.38 set in August 2008. Steven McQuillan then clocked a time of 24.69 in the men's 50 fly semis to lower his record of 24.70 set in March. He later matched his record with a 24.69 in finals.

In the men's 800 free relay, Kevin Stacey, Seamus Stacey, Jack Nunn and Hughes won in an Irish-record time of 7:43.52. The effort demolished Belfast's 7:54.84.

Doyle and Dawson returned during the third night of swimming to battle for the women's 100 free title. Doyle won in 56.62 to edged Dawson's semifinal record, while Dawson settled for second in 56.91.

The third men's relay record fell as Donal O'Neill, Stephen O'Nolan, Eoin Gray and Dermot Clerkin posted a 3:52.58 to smash the club's previous record of 4:00.77 in the men's 400 medley relay.

On the final day, Grainne Murphy (8:41.87) and Nuala Murphy (8:42.20) both beat Niamh O'Sullivan's women's 800 free Irish standard of 8:46.03 set in February, while McQuillan ended the meet with a national record in the final event. McQuillian touched in 54.96 in the men's 100 fly to wipe out his 55.16 set in March.
