South African National Championships: Roland Schoeman Opens Prelim Session Strong

DURBAN, South Africa, April 14. THE first day of preliminary swimming at the Telkom South African National Championships held in Durban came to a close with some strong swims overall.

Roland Schoeman stopped the clock in 21.83 in the men's 50 free prelims to earn a spot at the World Championships to be held in July. Meanwhile, Paralympic swimmer Shireen Sapiro clocked a world record time of 2:33.18 in the S10 division of the women's 200 backstroke.

Neil Versfeld, fresh off an NCAA and U.S. Open record time of 1:51.40 in the men's 200-yard breaststroke at the NCAA Division I Championships, posted a time of 1:01.57 in the men's 100-meter breaststroke to earn a provisional time for the World Championships.

Kirsty Coventry of Zimbabwe rolled through the women's 200-meter backstroke semifinal round with a time of 2:12.50.
