Zurich Grand Prix: Several More Swiss Records Fall

ZURICH, Switzerland, March 24. THE final two days of the Zurich Grand Prix featured some swift long course meter competition as several more Swiss records fell.

The third night of swimming began with David Karasek winning the men's 400 IM in 4:31.44. Annick van Westendorp followed with a 5:07.17 to win the women's 400 IM. In quicker competition, Damien Courois topped the men's 50 breast in 28.05, while Carmela Schlegel won the women's 50 breast in 32.62.

Flori Lang claimed the men's 100 free in 49.03, while Seraina Pruente touched first in the women's 100 free in 56.60. Lukas Raeuftlin cruised to victory in the men's 200 back in 2:05.12, while Martina van Berkel clocked a Swiss record time of 2:13.97 in the women's 200 back. The swim crushed the former record of 2:16.07 set by Nathalie Wunderlich back in 1992.

In distance events to close the first night, Martin Hohl won the men's 1500 free in 15:43.73, while Swann Oberson claimed the women's 800 free in 8:44.66.

The final night opened with Karasek winning again. This time he clocked a 2:07.17 in the men's 200 IM. Marina Ribi then grabbed the women's 200 IM in 2:18.60. Dominik Meichtry took home the men's 100 fly in 54.33, while van Berkel set her second Swiss record in two days with a 1:00.20 in the women's 100 fly. The performance smashed the 1:02.07 set by Carla Stampfli back in 2004. Laetitia Perez (1:00.89) and Danielle Carmen Villars (1:01.26) also cleared the former record.

Aurelien Kuenzi won the men's 50 free in 22.68, while Laura Noccioli set the Swiss record in the women's 50 free with a 25.81. The readout edged the 25.93 set by Marie-Therese Armentero 13 years ago in 1986.

Stefan Sigrist kept the record-breaking going with an 8:11.62 in the men's 800 free to smash the Swiss record of 8:15.74 set by Nils-Ole Jahnson in 2000. Oberson completed the night with a 16:40.95 to win the women's 1500 free.
