NAIA Championships: Cal Baptist Men, SCAD Women Lead After Day Three

SAINT PETERS, Missouri, March 6. CALIFORNIA Baptist men's team increased its lead at the 2009 NAIA Swimming and Diving National Championship, while Savannah College of Art and Design took over first-place on the women's side.

SCAD's women's team had the best day as it surpassed four-time defending national champion California Baptist for the team lead. The Bees entered the day 15 points behind California Baptist, but ended the day with 494 points, 50.5 points ahead of the Lancers. SCAD took over the lead after having 14 swimmers reach the finals in the day's five individual events.

California Baptist men's team is well on its way to a fourth-straight national championship. The team entered the day ahead by 116 points and increased that to 180 points after winning three events on Friday. The Lancers currently have 496 points, followed by Fresno Pacific with 316.

The most anticipated final of the day was the men's 100 breaststroke after three swimmers bettered the old meet record during the preliminary round. In the finals, California Baptist's Bryan Haile shattered the record he set earlier in the day when he finished with a mark 53.06.

That was one of four records set during the day. Also on the men's side, Carl Weigley broke the 100 butterfly record with a time of 48.12, Jorge Ospina set a new standard in the 200 free with a mark of 1:38.51, and California Baptist set its third relay record of the meet with a 400 medley time of 3:16.49. In the women's competition, Fresno Pacific's Cheyenne Coffman set the 100 back record with a time of 55.63.

Other individual winners during the day on the women's side were: Fresno Pacific's Stacy Carter (400 IM), Simon Fraser's Vicky Sui (100 fly), SCAD's Stephanie McNicol (200 free), Cumberland's Teresa Antesberger (100 breast), and Lindenwood's Chelsea Hardrick (3m dive). Carter, Sui, McNicol, Coffman, and Hardrick all won their second individual titles of the competition.

On the men's side, other individual winners were: California Baptist's Brad Terwilliger (400 IM) and Lindenwood's Thomas Bourdin (100 back). Ospina was the only men's swimmer to capture his second title of the event.

In the day's other relays, the champions were SCAD's women's 200 free relay, Illinois Institute of Technology's men's 200 free relay, and Simon Fraser's 400 medley relay.

The 2009 Swimming and Diving National Championships will conclude on Saturday at the St. Peters Rec-Plex, with prelims at 10 a.m. and the finals at 6 p.m.
