NJCAA Championships: Indian River Remains in Lead as Record Book Scorched

BUFFALO, New York, March 5. THE second night of short course yard swimming featured plenty more NJCAA records at the NJCAA Championships held in Buffalo, N.Y.

The Indian River State College women amassed 359 points to lead, while Darton held second with 231 points. Monroe (151), Lincoln (125) and Genesee (113) were third through fifth heading into the third day.

The IRSC men also owned a large lead with 363.5 points. Lincoln (260.5), Darton (173), Monroe (122) and Iowa Central (99) completed the top five.

IRSC's team of Mary O'Sullivan (23.61), Jennifer Marquez (23.37), Cara Potter (23.33) and Monika Mialka (22.64) leadoff the second day of the meet with an NJCAA and pool record time of 1:32.95 in the women's 200-yard free relay. The performance cleared the 1:35.08 NJCAA record set by IRCC back in 2002. The squad also beat the 1:33.00 pool record posted by Richmond in mid-February.

Indian River's foursome of Emmett Walling (19.54), Kelley Wyman (19.48), Nick Hein (19.68) and Nick Schwartz (20.08) followed with an NJCAA and pool record in the men's 200-yard free relay when the stopped the clock in 1:18.78. The clocking edged the previous NJCAA and pool standard of 1:18.84 set by IRCC in 2003.

One of the longest standing NJCAA records remained as Gwen Cross' 4:53.48 set while representing Brevard in the women's 500-yard free back in 1983 kept standing for another year. IRSC's Marquez earned a dominant victory in the middle-distance affair with a 4:56.65.

Jake Taylor's 1993 NJCAA record of 4:22.53 set for Indian River in the men's 500-yard free suffered a different fate, however, as IRSC's Mateo De Angulo clipped the standard with a time of 4:22.17.

Indian River's Mary Frank rolled through the women's 200-yard IM with a triumphant time of 2:07.00, while Lincoln's Brian Spittler became the first non-IRSC event winner this year with a 1:49.12 to touch out Indian River's Andy Garcia-Montes (1:49.29) for the men's 200-yard IM crown.

O'Sullivan returned with a blazing fast time in the women's 50-yard free as she set the NJCAA standard with a time of 23.13. The performance wiped out the 2008 record of 23.26 set by IRSC's Shanda Casella. Walling joined O'Sullivan in the win column with a sterling 19.70 for the men's 50-yard free. He'd already set the NJCAA record with a 19.43 during prelims. That effort erased the 19.66 set by Camilo Becerra of IRSC back in 2003.
