Dara Torres, U.S. Olympic Men's 400 Free Relay, Erin Popovich Named AAU Sullivan Award Semifinalists - VOTING OPEN -- March 10, 2009

Voting Open Now at USAToday.com; Updated March 10

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Florida, March 5. ACCORDING to a release this morning, the Amateur Athletic Union has named Dara Torres, the U.S. Olympic Men's 400 Free Relay Team and Erin Popovich as semifinalists for this year's AAU James E. Sullivan award. The award will be presented on April 15 at the New York Athletic Club.

The award, which is sometimes referred to as the Oscar of sports awards due to its longevity, has been given out for 78 years thus far. The Sullivan Award not only recognizes athletic achievement, but also honors "those who have shown strong moral character."

Online voting is a portion of the selection process and will be available at USAToday.com sometime soon. We will keep you posted when voting becomes available.

Torres finished the 2008 Beijing Games with three silver medals in the 50 free, 400 medley relay and 400 free relay.

Meanwhile, the U.S. Olympic Men's 400 Free Relay has been noted as the most electrifying event in Olympic swimming history by a variety of sources. Jason Lezak's final leg to overtake Alain Bernard has gone down as one of the best finishes in the sport of swimming.

Popovich had an amazing 2008 Beijing Paralympics as she won four gold and two silver medals as well as set a pair of world records in the process.

March 5, 2009 While it would be great were Dara to win, whatever hapened to that guy who won eight golds @ Beijing last summer?

If THAT feat don't qualify him as a potential nominee let alone a unanimous winner, I don't know waht does.

Just wondering: think his suspenson by USS might have had omething to do perhaps with his exclusion?

Otherwise it twould have seemed like a slam dunk no-brainer.

Naw, the AAU wouldn't be that petty and narrow-minded, would it?

Well I guess the only thing left for that guy to do is win a dozen golds golds this summer @ Rome and NOT go to any post-game parties this fall.

(Or if he does, make sure he buys all the cellpnhones and cameras there!)

well let's hope siwmming's first Sullivan winner since Tim shaw some 30 yarw ago makes it.

March 5, 2009 Slickwillie, I just wanted to correct your statement that there was a 30-plus-year gap between Sullivan Award winner for swimming.

Here are the swimmers that have won the award between Tim Shaw's win in 1975 and Michael Phelps' win in 2003:

John Naber (1977), Tracy Caulkins (1978), Janet Evans (1989). Also, Jessica Long won in 2006.

March 5, 2009 Speaking of Dara, she went 21.64 in the 50y Free in Texas - 4th fastest all time and .31 off Lara Jackson's AR - and top seed for finals (which are long course) by a lot.
