FAIRFAX, Virginia, February 27. ELEVEN records fell on day three of the 2009 CAA Swimming & Diving Championships at Jim McKay Natatorium in Fairfax, Va. Towson continues to lead the women's competition after three full days of action with 471 points, followed by George Mason with 370 and William & Mary with 367. On the men's side, UNC Wilmington leads with 469 points and Old Dominion is second with 400 points.
The first two records to be broken were in the men's and women's 400-yard individual medley. George Mason's Preston Wolter touched the wall in 3:49.73, breaking the previous record of 3:50.58 set by American's Frederick Hviid in 1994. Towson's Meredith Budner broke her own CAA meet record from last year's championship by nine seconds with a time of 4:15.08.
The men's and women's 100-yard butterfly were the next to fall, as Delaware Hans Gillan finished in 47.35. James Madison's Mark Gabriele had held the record of 48.44 for the past 14 years. UNC Wilmington's Caitlin Kirsteier collected her third-straight CAA title in this event, improving on her own mark by six-tenths of a second (53.28).
William & Mary's Katie Radloff continued to break records, taking the 200-yard freestyle for the third year in a row with a time of 1:47.21, surpassing her own mark of 1:48.19 in last year's competition.
In the men's and women's 100-yard breaststroke, Old Dominion's Arni Mar Arnason posted a time of 53.48, just under a second and a half better than last year's record by Geoge Mason's Eric Knight. George Mason's Ashley Danner surpassed the current record by just under three seconds with a time of 59.78.
Old Dominion's April Barrientos took home the victory and the new CAA meet record in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 55.48. The past record was set in 2006 when UNC Wilmington's Rebekah Teague finished in 56.49.
Drexel's Kate Hynes dominated the women's one-meter board for the fourth-consecutive year, breaking her own record with a score of 363.35.
George Mason's women's 400-yard medley relay team of Nicole Harmon, Ashley Danner, Caitlin Impink and Mary Beth Cheslock set a new meet record with a time of 3:43.21, which was four seconds faster than the William & Mary team in 2007.
In the men's 400-yard medley relay, UNC Wilmington's team of Andrew Rodgers, Robert Anderson, Tucker Waldron and Seth Liston broke the last record of the day, stopping the clock at 3:15.60. The record was last set in 2001 by an American University team.
Other victories from the day include Old Dominion's Chad Gangwer in the men's 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:38.72 and UNC Wilmington's Andrew Rodgers in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 47.19.
The championship continues Saturday at 10 a.m. with trials in the 200-yard backstroke, 100-yard freestyle, 200-yard breaststroke and 200-yard butterfly. Men's three-meter diving preliminaries begin at 1 p.m., while the 1650-yard freestyle finals begin at 3 p.m. Finals for the remaining events are scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. The CAA Swimming & Diving awards ceremony will follow the completion of the entire championship.
