Dec 12 College Best Times Posted

Now posted in our College Results Section is the Speedo/College Swimming Coaches Association of America College Best Times listing for 2000-2001, results from 13 invitationals held throughout the United States are featured. Below are highlights from some of the meets in which top 25 teams competed.

Texas Invitational, Dec. 1-3 in Austin, Texas: California freshman Natalie Coughlin was definitely the star of the meet. She set a 17-18 girls National Age Group record with her win in the 100 back (52.79). She also captured the 200 free (1:45.65), 100-200 fly (52.40-1:55.93) and 200 IM (1:58.35). UCLA won the women's portion of the competition with 553.5 points to Stanford's 529.5 and Texas' 501.5. On the men's side, Texas won with 751 points with a close race for second between California (563) and Arizona (554). Arizona's Tyler Painter (500-1650 free, 4:19.74-14:52.00; 400 IM, 3:48.02) won three events, while Roland Schoeman (100 fly, 47.16; 50 free, 19.48) won two.

Georgia Invitational, Dec. 1-3 in Athens, Georgia: Minnesota narrowly defeated Georgia for the men's team title with 1,039 points to the Bulldogs' 1,031. Florida State was third with 621.5. The championship was decided in the last event, the 400 free relay. The women's race, however, was never in doubt, as Georgia cruised to a 1,251-728 point victory over Clemson. The Seminole women were also third, scoring 628 points. Georgia coach Jack Bauerle pointed to standout efforts from Kyle Salyards, Randy Lam, Andrew Mahaney, Colin Underhill, Marc Lindsay, Maritza Correia, Stefanie Williams and Jamie Skinner. He concluded by saying, "This meet is exactly what we need this time of year. I'm proud of the effort all weekend."

Cavalier Invitational, Nov. 30-Dec. 2 in Charlottesville, Virginia: Both University of Virginia teams were victorious, winning five events each on the final day of the meet. Virginia's men won the six-team meet with 1,434 points. Yale's second-place total was 730 points, with West Virginia coming in third at 556. The Lady Cavaliers won with 1,046 points. Yale was second with 752 points and West Chester finished in third with 614.5 points. Virginia distance ace Cara Lane (16:15.82) has a nation-leading time in the 1650 free.

Eastern Michigan Invitational, Dec. 1-2 in Ypsilanti, Michigan: Eastern Michigan senior Bryson Tam has the top time in the nation in the 100 yard breast (54.76). In the process, Tam set school, Mid-American Conference and pool records in the event and qualified for the NCAA Championships. Eastern Michigan, in winning six of the first seven events, compiled 1,206 points to Kalamazoo College's 581.5.
