BOWLING GREEN, Ohio, February 26. DAY one of the Mid-American Conference's Women's Swimming and Diving Championships was filled with record-setting excitement, and ended with Miami University on top of the standings after Thursday's action at Bowling Green's Student Recreation Center.
In event one, the 200-yard medley relay, Buffalo out-swam Miami by just 22/100ths of a second, 1:39.74 to 1:39.96. Both units' times eclipsed the previous pool, meet and MAC records, as did the times of Toledo and Ohio in third and fourth place. Miami's Alyson Schmidt (Maineville) swam her anchor leg in :21.82 behind teammates Malarie Schmidt (Batavia, IL), Kelsey Vehr (Cincinnati), Nicole Roddenbery (Peachtree, GA), but it wasn't quite enough to beat the Bulls. Miami's time was an NCAA "B" standard mark.
In the 800 freestyle relay final, Miami's Allison Way (Omaha, NE), Chelsey Bruington (Mission Viejo, CA), Alyson Schmidt and Allison Stevens (Laurel, MD) combined to swim a MAC- and school-record time of 7:13.21, nipping Ohio by 21/100ths of a second. Stevens was the real hero, sailing through her 200-yard anchor leg in a time 1:46.95. Like the 200 medley relay, Miami's 800 free relay time was an NCAA "B" qualifying mark.
Coach Dave Jennings's RedHawk relay teams' first- and second-place finishes combined for 74 points. Toledo, Buffalo and Ohio are tied for second place with 64 points each, followed by Eastern Michigan (56), Bowling Green (54), Akron (52) and Ball State (44).
"I'm very pleased with tonight's performance," said Jennings. "We got off to a great start and it gives us a lot of confidence going into tomorrow."
Action continues on Friday, with finals scheduled in the 200 freestyle relay, the 500 freestyle, the 200 IM, the 50 freestyle and one-meter diving event.
