Big West Championships: Day One

LONG BEACH, California, February 17. THE first day of the 2010 Big West Swimming & Diving Championships is a thing of the past and the UC Santa Barbara women and UC Davis men find themselves in the early lead. The Championships are being held at Belmont Plaza Pool in Long Beach, Calif.

The Gauchos scored 114 points in the first day of competition, 14 points ahead of Cal Poly. Third place belongs to UC Davis with 95 points, while Pacific (82) and Cal State Northridge (64) round out the women's standings after the first day.

The Aggie men put up 124 points for the day one lead, while Cal Poly sits in second place with 113 points. Pacific is third with 92 points, with defending champion UC Santa Barbara in fourth (89) and Cal State Northridge in fifth (62).

The first scored event of the 2010 league meet was a high intensity race in the 200 medley relay. UC Santa Barbara found itself in first place in both races as the women completed the event in 1:40.41, while the men stopped the clock after 1:28.47.

The 1000 free was the next event and a familiar face won the women's race. Lacey Buck of Cal Poly won her second 1000 free in as many seasons, outlasting Pacific's Jayme Swalin (10:01.80) by touching the wall in 10:01.55. Buck's teammate Matt Waggoner claimed an easy victory in the men's 1000 free with a time of 9:08.74, nearly eight seconds faster than the runner up.

The final scored event of the day was the 800 free relay and a raucous crowd greeted the participants in both races. The women's race saw history made as UC Davis completed the event in a meet and Big West record 7:17.96. The Aggies made it a clean sweep in the event as the men's relay contingent took home first place in 6:33.55.

The 2010 Big West Swimming & Diving Championship will be held at the Belmont Plaza Olympic Pool in Long Beach, Calif. on February 17-20.
