Mesa State Adds Men’s Swimming

GRAND JUNCTION, Colorado, February 24. LAST week, Mesa State College announced that it would add men's swimming, along with men's golf, beginning with the 2009-10 competition season.

Here is the full release from the athletics department:

Mesa State College athletic department will add men's golf and men's swimming and diving as intercollegiate varsity sports in the fall of 2009 announced today by athletic director, Butch Miller. With the addition of men's golf and swimming and diving, it brings the number of intercollegiate varsity sports to 18 at Mesa State College.

MSC becomes the eleventh school in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference to sponsor men's golf and six institutions offer men's swimming and diving; three RMAC schools and three associate member institutions. Men's golf and men's swimming and diving will be RMAC sponsored.

"We look forward to bringing these sports on board and the opportunity it brings to our students enrolled and potential student-athletes considering Mesa State," said MSC Athletic Director Butch Miller. "The level of interest that golf and swimming have in this community, surrounding counties and across the country will enhance the opportunities for the college-bound student to partake in collegiate athletics and receive a quality education," added Miller.

MSC currently sponsors women's golf (1996) and swimming (2005) with a high level of participation and success. "It certainly makes sense with the new on campus aquatics facility to be complete next fall and four great golf courses right here in Grand Junction (Tiara Rado, Lincoln Park, Redlands Mesa, Bookcliff Country Club) to take full advantage of our resources," said Miller.

Head women's swim coach, Brian Pearson, will oversee the men's swim program and current women's golf coach, Scott Hansen will take over the men's program.

Miller is pleased to announce that women's lacrosse will be added in the fall of 2010. Regis and Fort Lewis currently have varsity programs; Adams State will add women's lacrosse in fall.
