America East Championships: Day Three

BOSTON, Massachusetts, February 21. WITH one day of competition remaining in the conference championships, the Boston University women's swimming and diving team maintained its position at the top with 525 points, while the men's team remained within 20 points of leader UMBC with 616 points. Eight more records were set, including sophomore Matt Rickett's 46.43 performance in the 100 fly, which was the 13th fastest time in the nation this season.

On the women's side, junior Emily Munday broke her own school record in the 100 fly with a time of 54.73 in the preliminary round earlier in the afternoon, and went on to take top honors in the finals with a time of 54.88. Also, standing atop the podium was senior Christina Ruggiero, who was victorious in the 400 IM with a time of 4:24.83. Picking up valuable points in that event was junior Brigette O'Shaughnessy, who touched the wall less than a second after Ruggiero in 4:25.71.

Senior Eve Kinsella reset her own school record in the 200 free with a preliminary time of 1:49.59. In the finals, she placed third overall with a time of 1:49.78. Freshman Kristen Connors placed second in the 100 breaststroke, clocking in at 1:04.31, while sophomore Maria McIntyre took third in the 100 back in 57.41.

The men's squad saw six more records fall, beginning with junior Tyson Slesnick's record-breaking swim in the 400 IM, as he reset his own mark with a time of 3:58.10.

Sophomore Matt Rickett made waves with his performance in the 100 fly, as he broke his own school record in the 100 fly by over three seconds, clocking in at 46.43 – an NCAA consideration time and the 11th-fastest time record in Division I this season. Junior Arik Seiler placed second in the 200 free with a time of 1:38.91 – breaking a 17-year-old record previously held by Scott Weiland in 1992. Sophomore Bryon Kallert also snapped a nearly two-decade old record when he clocked in at 50.36 in the 100 back.

In the three-meter diving event, senior Andre Watson broke his own record with a score of 631.60. Sophomore Tanner Knorr placed fifth with 570.20 points and senior Alex Caesar was sixth with 487.75 points.

The 400 medley relay team of Kallert, Kyle Ernst, Rickett and freshman Jackson Hill clocked in a winning time of 3:1695 – over five seconds fastest than the previous school record.

The 2009 America East Swimming and Diving Championships will conclude on Sunday (Feb. 22) at BU's Competition Pool.
