Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Championships: Day One

MECHANICSBURG, Pennsylvania, February 20. ROD King and Max Bernardes placed first and second in the 1,000-yard freestyle to lead West Chester's men's swimming team to 37 points and a first-place showing after the first day of competition at the 2009 PSAC Men's Swimming Championships held at Cumberland Valley High School's swimming pool.

West Chester's 37 points leads Edinboro, who is in second place with 30 points after the first event. Shippensburg is third with 29 points.

Rod King touched the wall in 9 minutes, 26.91 seconds, setting a PSAC Championship meet record and hitting an NCAA ‘B' cut time to take the conference title away from teammate Bernardes, who set the conference record a year ago while winning the title.

Max Bernardes clocked a 9:29.83 to place second behind King.

Kristen Montello finished third and Danielle Ierley fourth in the 1,000-yard freestyle to lead West Chester's women's swimming team to 38 points and a first-place showing after the first day of competition at the 2009 PSAC Women's Swimming Championships held at Cumberland Valley High School's swimming pool.

West Chester leads the field after day one with 38 points. Indiana (Pa.) is right behind with 28 points.

Montello clocked a time of 10 minutes, 22.51 seconds, which was good for an NCAA ‘B' cut time, to finish third in the only scoring event of the evening. Ierley touched the wall just behind her in 10:31.84 to also record an NCAA ‘B' cut time.

Special thanks to West Chester for contributing this report.
